“LATE NIGHT SHOWS!”

…………………Over my 20 year span at QVC I’ve had more than my share of late night and over night shows……..as many of you know…….It seemed the longer I was at QVC the more late night shows I got!!!!….Arriving at the hotel in the afternoon, Jac and I would have something small to eat, and then rest. We usually tried to get to QVC at least 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours before a show. Jac would go to the Green Room, and start to get ready, and I would go into the model’s area to work with the stylist. I always sent the numbered sketches in advance with the model’s name on them so the stylist could pull the right size clothes they would need before I arrived……Hopefully, by the time I got there the clothes would be lined up on racks in the show order. Once that was done we would go through what she or he had done, and discuss any problems that might have come up. I usually brought a slew of my samples just incase they didn’t have them in the right color or size needed. This would happen quite often, and it was a good thing I brought my 3 or 4 garment bags filled with samples. Once that was complete the stylist and I would assign shoes. I always preordered from QVC inventory the shoes I would need. Once that was done the stylist would start to steam and press the clothes. While that was being done I would hang the accessory bags on each outfit. That would complete the process…….Then the models would arrive and take their usual places in the cubicles they always took during my shows…..That’s the way each show was done no matter what time of day….or night.   As you can see from the photos, arriving at QVC late at night was quite spooky. The parking lot was empty since mine was the only show at that time of night…..The only people there were two security men at the front door to check us in, and then again two people at the “Hospitality” desk where we would sign in at the back area by the Green Rooms……It was already a long day for all of us, but we had to get the adrenalin going. The girls always said it was easier to get the energy up to do my late shows, because they knew they were going to be wearing pretty clothes, and not the usual fare that they normally had to wear…..It’s always easier at 2am when you put on some sparkly sequins! LOL…I would go through the sketches with each of the models so they knew exactly what they were wearing, and any special instructions I had for them……At the appropriate time I would check out how everyone looked in their first outfits, and we would proceed to the set…..Jac would take my hands and say to me….”hon….All you have to be is Wonderful”…..That always gave me a boost!……After the show, back to the hotel for some sleep before we headed home in the morning…..Another show done…..and back to “our own separate peace”

“MOVING DAY”

…………..Jac and I were both collectors, and we have things we have purchased from all around the world. Things we loved…….However, there comes a time when you have to say enough……Everything we collected has a place….but….there are things that no longer worked…especially when we combined two apartments. Things had to go into storage. One of those things was a beautiful antique, farm house, hand painted hutch…. The solid hutch was made in one piece, and didn’t come apart! Jac and I decided to put the hutch into storage along with a “captain’s bar” from a ship. The bar belonged to her grandfather, her Mom’s dad, so it had great sentimental value, but it never really fit into our house. These pieces sat in storage for years along with racks of Linea samples. It was time for me to part with them. My family didn’t want them for one reason or another….mostly no room, or they didn’t work with their other furnishings…..Then I asked Angela and Chantal if they were interested? Angela said she would love to have it. It finally had a home……We set a date for her to pick it up. I told her it took me, my brother and his two strapping sons to get it out of my house and into the storage facility so she would need help. She said, “oh, Chantal and I can do it, we’re very strong!” I told her she was nuts!….The date was set, and she and Chantal drove up from PA in this large van/truck. I knew there was no way these two skinny girls and I could lift this thing onto a dolly let alone get it into a truck!!! I asked Lou and Franco if they would volunteer to help. They love the girls so they said yes….The five of us took off for the storage facility, with our masks on, and eventually managed to get this hulk of a hutch out and into the truck. We laughed so hard because we couldn’t keep the dolly straight going down the hall, and Franco was almost crushed!!!…..It almost tipped over!!….In spite of it all we actually had a great time!!…Then Franco and Lou had to get to work, and the three of us went to get something to eat. Of course the girls couldn’t go home empty handed so they filled bags with Linea samples I no longer wanted or needed. Plastic containers filled with sweaters from many different Linea collections were also piled into the back of the truck….Then off they went, with smiles on their faces, for their three hour trip back to PA….Angela sent photos of the hutch in her house…it looked great…..Eventually, I’ll empty the storage room enough to either down size or close it altogether….which is my plan……..The Captain’s Bar is still there!
