“THE ACCESSORIES”

………………………….With EVERY  apparel collection I design……I also design the accessories to go with the clothing…..LEATHER became  KEY  to a large group of the accessories…..BELTS…..FOOTWEAR……BRACELETS and EARRINGS…..Hoop Earrings were made out of leather….Coil and Cuff bracelets were also made from leather….Leather belts also played a strong accessory role. I used heavy contrast ivory saddle stitching to accent  all of these pieces……..Shoes always were designed to coordinate to each collection, and were a huge part of the Anne Klein cadry of licensees……Platforms of all sorts in different materials played a  major role in creating the look of the shoe collection….. Belts were primarily wide….either at the waist or slung on the hips……Shown here the suede platform open toe sandal with ankle strap……Another important material was the SANDED, and METALLIC WASHED snake skin as in the teacup heel, wide instep band thong, sling back sandal.

“THE LOOK”

……………………..”THE LOOK” that opened the Spring 1992, Anne Klein Couture Show was inspired by the “CLASSICS”……..with a major TWIST……UNCONSTRUCTION…… The three fabrics in the photo were all made for me by Roberto Sarti, who’s mill is in Prato just outside of Florence, Italy. Roberto made beautiful fabrics, but I especially loved his innovative knit fabrics……He took one yarn that had a micro thin black thread twisted into it, mixed it with a silk yarn, and made three distinct fabrics for me…….A stretch light weight knit for tops, unitards, a pull-on tube skirt, leggings and dresses……a woven gauze, and a woven basket weave pattern jacket weight fabric, were made for me. It was both suitable for pants and skirts., besides different types of jackets…….The outfit in the photo on Gayle Elliot opened the show, and gave the audience a clear picture of what was to come…..Gayle is wearing a KNIT UNITARD….a ONE BUTTON WRAP GAUZE SKIRT, and a WOVEN DOUBLE BREASTED BLAZER…..all in PUTTY….Some say you can tell if a show is going to be good or not when they see the first 4 or 5 outfits on the runway. I rather think that’s true….of course not everyone will always have the same opinion of those first outfits being shown…..They must have loved what they saw, because the collection sold very well!!

………………………..The Spring Anne Klein Couture  Collection of 1992 was very special to me……because it was my LAST spring collection for AK after 20 years of designing and overseeing all aspects of design and advertising…….The photo to the far left is of Christy Turlington in the opening page of my AK Spring 1992 National Ad Campaign…….The unitard and the one button wrap skirt were two key pieces in the collection…….With this collection I wanted to open a dialogue of new possibilities of dressing….knew ways of layering……knew ways to use illusion and transparency and using it as camouflage….Adding an unconstructed and fluid jacket gives the wearer an instant nonchalance…..There is definitely an ‘Air Of India” through out the collection with its’ languid long silhouettes and the iconic gold emb. I hope you enjoy taking this trip back to 1992 with me.
