“THE LIVIING ROOM”

……………….The “LIVING ROOM” is the first room you come to when you pass through the Library……Whereas the green Library is some what dark and cozy….the living room is light and cheery!…..The two sofas and two arm chairs were custom made for me with my friend Burt Wayne’s help. They are actually upholstered in BEIGE NEEDPOINT fabric…..The floral slip covers were supposed to be for summer only…..but they looked so good for the Holidays we never took them off!….This room used to be the nucleus of the house before we had the gathering/ family room added on. We used to do all of our entertaining in this room, and the Christmas tree used to go in the corner where the red Chinois secretary is…..The low coffee table in the center is also Chinese. There are four fireplaces in  the house, and when we used to use the living room for everything, the fireplace was always on. Under the large French mirror is a French Bombe chest. On either side of the couch against the wall are two English end tables….one is a PIE SHAPE TILT table, and the other is an oblong table with a center draw…….There is another table near the huge window that faces the sun porch. This table belonged to Jac’s grandmother, and she brought it with her from Belgium….so the room is VERY INTERNATIONAL!. We keep a silver tray with our collection of cut crystal decanters, glass bells and two large candelabra on Jac’s grandmother’s table…all of which were Christmas presents we gave to each other. I had seen the candelabra at an antique show in Greenwich, Ct…..but Jac said it was the first room we went into, and we should look around the entire show first before making such a big decision…..so I left them behind….We left the show…never to buy them. On Christmas morning Jac brought out these two huge boxes she had hidden on the sun porch, which we rarely went into during the winter….Inside to my great surprise were the two candelabra….She had taken the card of the owner, and called him when we got home. She bought them over the phone, and he had them packed up. She picked them up the next day….SNEAKY!!!!……The red Chinois secretary is an interesting story…..Real antique Chinese secretaries can cost in the hundreds of thousand of dollars. I had seen one on the cover of a magazine, and I showed it to my friend Burt. He said I can have it reproduced exactly for you….He and John Docktor, his business partner brought me to this place owned by a Chinese woman who made all kinds of things. She showed us huge panels she was having hand painted like Coromandel screens that were going to be installed in someone’s dining room….They were magnificent. She said that she could make the secretary!!!!….John designed all of the schematics, every measurement, every detail of the piece…….from the finials on top to the round ball feet below…..When the secretary was built, we then had to go and work with this woman and the one man that was going to paint it and do all the art work on it…..He was a rare artisan, and did amazing work……Step by step we chose the two red colors, one brighter, and one deep for the inside of the cubbies and cabinets. After each section was designed on paper by the artist who would be hand painting the piece, John and I would go and approve it before it was painted onto the secretary….We kept adding more and more designs, and painted trims. There are hidden doors, and candle trays that slide in and out. Every surface has something painted on it. It took months to do, but when it was finished it was amazing. I asked the lady if she was going to take pictures of it to show to other interior designer clients of hers, and she said NO….she never wanted to make another!!!!! TOO MUCH WORK!!!!!….LOL…..All of the blue and white Delft vases that are on the walls and in the secretary Jac and I either bought when we went to Amsterdam and traveled through the Netherlands and to Delft itself….Others we purchased through dealers, but you must buy from reputable people, because there are many reproductions, and we were only interested in authentic old Delft pieces…..The gold leaf wall brackets I bought in a tiny antique store in Florence, Italy. At the time. many years ago, I was single and living in my very modern apartment. I had absolutely no place to hang them!!…but I bought all he had, because antique hand carved, gold leaf wall brackets were becoming more and more rare to find, and more expensive too….and I LOVED them….Such artisan work was becoming more and more rare as the artisans who carved and made them were either retiring or dying…. This sweet old man who owned the store showed me all he had, and I bought them all. They sat stored away for YEARS…..When Jac and I bought this house….they finally had a home!…The mantel is covered with a garland…..assorted fruits and a pheasant in the center….There are Bell Candle holders at either end….All of the grape vine small Christmas trees and Topiaries Jac and I made in 1973, and they still look great.

“IT’S COOKIE TIME!”

……………………It’s that time of year…..COOKIE BAKING TIME!…….Though it’s good any time of year to make a batch of cookies!!……..From left to right…..My PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES….is the easiest receipt ever!…ONE EGG…..ONE CUP OF SUGAR [I use a half cup of white sugar and half a cup of brown sugar], and one cup of PEANUT BUTTER….You can use creamy or chunky…..I prefer the CHUNKY!…..The peanut butter shouldn’t be too oily! I like SMART BALANCE, but all of a sudden the stores aren’t carrying…the chunky!!!???….so I bought the creamy, and some Planters no salt peanuts….put them in my food processor…two or three hits and I had wonderful chunky peanuts which I added to the other three ingredients [one cup]…When making the cookie you scoop out about a table spoon….roll in a ball in your palms, and place on parchment paper on a cookie sheet….You don’t want the cookie to be too big!….Depending on your oven [middle rack],  cook for 9 to 12 minutes, or until you see the top of the cookie turning slightly golden. You want to make sure you don’t burn the bottoms!!!! Then take out of the oven and let them cool. Once cool put them on a platter and ENJOY!….I always put a dark chocolate kiss on top [optional], but if you do MAKE SURE THE COOKIE IS ALMOST COOL….or the kiss will melt into a chocolate puddle!…..Those are the ones I usually eat!…LOL….I doubled the receipt to make more cookies…..In the center are the GINGER COOKIES, which are more complicated……For the complete receipt search…..”Jac’s Ginger Cookies”….here on my website….they are the best Ginger cookies I have ever had, and all those who have had my cookies [Jac’s cookies], agree. They are chewy!…….The cookies at the right are….PIZZELLES…….Cathy always brings me Pizzelles for Christmas, and I LOVE them…..Last Christmas she gave me a Cuisinart Pizzelle press, which is sort of like a waffle maker. Different receipts come with the pamphlet. I use the basic receipt, but I add two teaspoons of MACE, because I love the flavor of mace. Cathy had some on her recent visit, and said….”these came out better than mine!”…..a huge compliment!!…….I have more cookies, and some cheesecake making lined up for different guests coming through the month so I better get my chef’s hat on!!!

“DECEMBER 12TH”

………………..On December 12th, 2017, at 3:42 pm…..Jac left this Earth…….and she left me forever……It is hard to believe that it is 7 years now that she is gone….it sometimes seems like yesterday, and other times it seems like an eternity…..It is absolutely impossible for me to list ALL the things I miss about Jac…..Her loving, and generous personality….her eyes “as blue as the sky” as her mom always said….her soft skin…her beautiful long legs…her pouty lips….her silky blond hair……her delicious cooking…..but one of the things I do miss more and more….is the sound of her voice….As the years go by her “voice” gets dimmer and dimmer…..I am grateful that there are a few videos that exist where Jac is speaking, and I can watch them and hear her…but I miss her saying with her soft sweet voice….”Lou”…….I have received many questions from people, women and men, on how I cope with losing my life’s partner….the love of my life….Coping truly is different for everyone…..When Jac was very sick, near the end, she told me I had to have a “routine”, and “if I didn’t have one….to make one up”…..She said it would save me….to have something to do each day….She told me it saved her when her beloved mom passed…..She was more worried about me being alone, and drifting into oblivion than her dying!….She was right! I started a daily routine that I could always distract myself with………The first year is the worst…sometimes unbearable…..because…..it’s the first time for everything you are doing alone that you have always done together…..without your love…….The first birthday….the first anniversary….the first Easter, 4th of July, Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving……and the first CHRISTMAS……the first spring, summer, fall and winter…..the first snowfall  that Jac always loved…….You miss the everyday things you always did with your best friend and partner in life….your love…. I miss having breakfast together….having dinner by candle light…baking Christmas cookies together….going out for a ride to look at the colorful leaves falling….something Jac loved to do on windy days…all the little things……you miss holding hands…..you miss the everyday hugs……..you miss the kisses…..Maybe I’ve said too much…Jac used to say I did, but talking  about Jac is very cathartic for me….Somehow it makes me feel closer to her……My thoughts of Jac aren’t constantly painful……I try not to think of those last few months, and days when her health got worse and worse…It was the absolute most difficult time of my life…..it is just too painful to think of those days….However…..The pain of losing her isn’t as raw as it was that first year…..A layer of skin has grown over that wound…..but don’t scratch it too deeply, because it all comes roaring back….I try to think of all the happy good times, and the pictures I surround myself with help a great deal to remind me of all the wonderful vacations and the wonderful days we shared together……..My solace is that Jac is where she told me she wanted to be……in her Mom’s loving arms……I imagine them together, watching over me, and I smile with tears in my eyes……Every night before I go to sleep, as I look at her pictures at my bedside…..I say out loud….”good night my sweetheart….I love you over the moon and beyond the stars…….one day closer”.

“ORNAMENTS”

………………..Through out Jac and my travels together….we always found a shop that had Christmas ornaments….no matter what season it was…..On a trip to Vienna, we found these HAND CARVED, and HAND PAINTED wooden ornaments….The MUSICIANS….the JESTER….the MILK MAID…..the DANCING LADY….and the SANTA holding the baby REINDEER…all hang from the green velvet portieres in the Green Library….We thought they were very unique, and had not seen anything like them….We had to have them…..At my age….I need all the help I can get to bring back these sweet memories……….and these ornaments always bring back the great time we had in VIENNA!

“TAPESTRY, & NEEDLEWORK PILLOWS”

………………In the Green Library there are TAPESTRY chairs, a NEEDLEWORK pillows….The banquet, covered in a classic, forest leaf jacquard fabric, is a line, from end to end, with these pillows….Every chair in the room has a needlework pillow…….I love antiques, especially ones that are extremely unique, and display the artisan work of people long gone…..These artists live on through the beauty they created…..When the green velvet walls of room were finished and the matching green velvet portieres were hung from gold leaf rods with pineapple finials….the room called out for TAPESTRY chairs and pillows to add warmth and a sense of being there, and lived in for centuries…..I never get tired of looking at the colors of the flora and fauna, and the whimsical characters on each pillow….Their richness all tell a story of times past.
