“VIENNA AT NIGHT”

There is nothing more beautiful…… than a beautiful city……. lit BEAUTIFULLY at night. New York, Paris, London and Rome are all such cities……after seeing Vienna….It rightfully has been added  to my list. The buildings by day are so wonderful that it was a pleasure and a relief to see that such care was taken to properly display them to their best after the sun had long set. Our hotel, The Imperial, is the photo in the upper right. One evening we went to the Prater, which is a huge amusement park, and the lights were magical. You can see in the lower right a GIGANTIC cat about to devour some revelers in a swirling cup. The three photos on the extreme left were taken at the DO & CO restaurant at the Albertina. I loved the way the interiors of many restaurants and hotels still maintain the “old world charm” of what appears to be gas lit lamps. Well, we had a wonderful time in Vienna and we have lots and lots of pictures to keep all of the wonderful memories alive…………….Auf Weidersehen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Dear Louis —

Your Vienna photos by night and by day are terrific. You have an artistic way of combining photos on the postcard. And your descriptions of the places you visited are superb. Thank you ever so much for taking the time to prepare, describe, and share with us! Very much appreciated!

A quick question: will you be bringing Linea pieces made in silk and/or linen? Your silk blouses and linen pants/jackets are some of my favorite vintage Linea pieces.

    Happy Labor Day. Thanks again.

P.S. I agree with you that Paris is the superior city by night! And what did you think of Freud’s red couch??!!

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

Unfortunately no….not my choice……I don’t think the red couch was there?

Too bad about silk and linen. Seems there should be a market for these fabrics among Q shoppers. I for one would buy your silk/linen pieces. The iconic red couch may have been covered with oriental rugs when you were there.

Louis, as a few of your Linea ladies suggested, I’m currently watching the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert 2012 while also viewing your wonderful postcards! What a lovely experience! Thank you for sharing.

Love your nighttime photos! I can’t speak to Vienna as I have never been, but I do visit my sister in Paris from time to time during the Christmas season, and nothing compares to those Parisian nights. I’m imagine Vienna is the same- I’ve heard about the Christmas Markets that light up dring Advent. And the white Christmases at night! What could be ore magical. Your pictures have me dreaming!

Paris at night is definitely the winner, bar none. It is the most gorgeous city day or night. Jac read about the special Christmas stores that are set up in Vienna, and I’m am sure winter in Vienna is something truly special. It would be fun to explore and then drop in a landmark cafe for some hot chocolate and pastries……..one could get very fat in Vienna if one lets themselves go!!!!!

We were there when the Christmas Market went up in front of the Rat Haus, Louis. From what I understand, there are more now in other parts of the city, including at Schonbrun and the Spitleberg section in the 8th District. We bought a good many locally hand made ornaments which we still have and treasure as our time there during Advent. Vienna is dark that time of the year by 4PM. And cold! But merry with the chestnut roasters with their outdoor kettles and the kiosks selling hot “punsch” both with and without alcohol. The Graben is particularly beautifully lit up and the storefronts are gorgeous. But of course you have to warm yourself up with some hot chocolate and pastries! After eating some tafelspitz, of course. Yes, Vienna can be hazardous to both the waistline and the cholesterol count. Whatta way to go!

Dear Louis, Well this does it! You’ve convinced me that we must go to Vienna! I grew up in Europe but never got to Austria and have always wanted to see Vienna. Twilight and evening are my favourite times of day and the city looks so magical! Thank you and Jac for sharing your lovely time there with us.
