……………………That once in a year time has come when the air is filled with the intoxicating fragrance of LILACS……there is nothing like it……Jac had me plant a lilac bush where ever she could find a space. At every opportunity she would go and bury her face in the blooms and sigh…”come, come” she would say “Come and smell these beautiful flowers”………Every year I would say, “let me cut some and bring them in the house so you can smell them all day”. “No” she would say. “they belong out here, and I don’t want to hurt them”. How can you fight with that reasoning. Today they are in their glory. I can’t remember when they have been so lush. I would love to cut some and bring them in my office……but………”I don’t want to hurt them”.
“THE LILACS ARE IN BLOOM AGAIN”

Your lilacs are lovely. One of my favorite memories of my dad involved lilacs. Every spring I would often see him working in the yard with a lilac in one of the top button holes of his shirt. We too had lilac bushes. I never actually saw him pick the bloom, but some how one always seemed to appear. We have a cutting from one of those bushes. Whenever I see it I think of my dad. Thanks for sharing.
Louis, I think Jac would have made an exception for this coming weekend. We are expecting an arctic freeze here in New England and possible even snow is some areas. I’d cut some and bring in to fill some vases, as they may all get frozen and ruin the blossoms. It happened once before here in New England in May back in the early 70’s. Check your weather forecast. Maybe you are far enough south there on the Sound to escape it.

Thanks Shelia for the heads up….My poor cherry trees….just as they are in full bloom….mother nature wields her sword!
Last week I walked through my neighborhood during the early evening hours, just as shadows had begun to fall. As I turned the corner and climbed the slight incline of a nearby street, the sweetest of smells wafted toward me. The smell was, as you will guess, from a huge lilac bush. The evening was so sweet because of their frangrance.
My lilacs came to full blown approximately two weeks before this bush and I wondered why. Perhaps it is because my bush sits in full sunlight while the bush I encountered that evening sits in shade.
My dear husband planted our lilac bush, and every year when it blooms, I think of it as another of his gifts that keep on giving. He loved his gardens and plants so much.
I grew up in Lombard Illinois near Chicago. Lombard was called the lilac town because we had a park in the middle of town near the library that was all lilacs and tulips. In the spring it was just glorious. We had a whole festival that took place in the park. Where I live now in California it’s a little too warm to grow lilacs. I do remember their fragrance and how wonderful it was.
Oh Louis, lilacs are one of my favorite flowers too so I understand Jac’s fondness for them. I just planted 6 more (3 Miss Canada, 2 Agincourt Beauty, 1 Sensation) and have 3 Beauty of Moscow coming yet. My dear husband and one of my sons are my hole diggers. I am hoping that Miss Canada looks like the pink one you showed us. Spring flowers just make one feel so happy! Love and hugs to you!
Oh Louis! Breathtaking.
Oh, Louis, another of my favorites!Yours look wonderful, so full, so lush and the smell divine. Lilacs and lavender makes me think of a time far, far in the past. Enjoy your treasures! Cat
How I miss them in Florida! Their fragrance evokes such wonderful memories from my childhood that I look for them when we travel in the Spring. Thanks for sharing another sweet reminiscence!
