Walter’s birthday was July 19. He got a big chocolate fudge cake all to himself, although I confess to sneaking ONE piece :). And a bowl of a new frosting/topping recipe: A Cream Cheese and Whipped Cream soft frosting/topping. He’s a happy man π
Love these photos; all of them. The sailboat in front of that remarkable cloud is my favorite. The whale is a heartstopping moment, right? And my heart belongs to the dogs in front of the children’s room doors. We used to have an 85 pound gentle giant, quiet dog we rescued. He looked like a cross between a Newfoundland and a Border Collie. His name was Shadow, and he was, padding quietly along right next to us wherever we were. My mom was in a nursing home; he often went to visit and was very popular with residents, as he could almost look them in the eye in their wheelchairs, and was so quiet and gentle. There was one lady though … she was clearly very distressed and distressed, sitting in her chair, with her head down, forlorn and sad. Every day her tiny, frail husband would try to get her to talk and eat, with little success. One day though … one day she got a good look at our Shadow, and began speaking to him and the nurse, quietly but vehemently, and they took her out. As she passed, we heard her tell them “Dogs belong OUTSIDE, on a farm … NOT inside!”. LOL, her husband couldn’t figure out if he should be upset or glad she was talking and responding :). Our girl Reffi now looks after … US.

My grandmother was from the beautiful island of Chios. The only place where the Mastica tree grows with many healthy and beneficial uses. Like many of the islands, rich in history and architecture, beaches , hospitality and food. Canβt forget the food, lol. Many happy memories and visits. Thank you for sharing, Louis.

Just wanted to add that the dock area of the Greek islands, as many of you know, is where much of the commerce, eateries and entertainment are located. Also, I typically write “family was” and not “family were,” as I did in my above post. Wrote before having my second cup of coffee.
Chios is known for having produced many shipowners, and, if I recall correctly, the family of Aristotle Onassis sought refuge on Chios after fleeing the Great Fire of Smyrna (modern-day Izmir, Turkey), where they lived as Anatolian Greeks.
The photo is gorgeous!

I may be one of a handful of your fans who has visited Chios. My first husband’s family were from that island, and as a young woman, after visiting some family friends on the nearby island of Lesbos/Mytilene, I stopped at Chios to honor my future in-laws. My experience was limited to primarily the dock area, but I did visit it.
Recently, I viewed a delightful film called “The Trip to Greece,” which I enjoyed very much. At the start of the film, the protagonists are in Turkey, across from Mytilene. When I visited Mytilene, I was surprised that you can actually see Turkey from its shores; it is that close. Fascinating places as they really smack of West Asia/Anatolia.

Louis, the Greek Islands, but looks like we may have to include Chios Island!
Since I “quit” work Dan and I have vacationed in the Fall, rather than the Summer. Oddly enough we hadn’t planned something in advance for this year. Rather than traveling abroad, which we may not be able to do anyway, I think we’ll head up to New England, I love Watch Hill, Newport and the Maine Coast.

Elaine, if your plan is really to go to New England….make reservations early. They too will have diminished capacity.
What a Beautiful photo!
Breathing photo!
With the help of God, that is the trip we have planned for next year!
Thank you Louis…Always!
Elaine
Elaine, are you planning to go to that island or the Greek Islands in general?
