Colors

I have been reading your suggestions, and I am getting the message….that most of you  like neutrals. Other than a few of you who want the boho in some colors and one or two other items. It seems the majority want navy, ivory of a sort [beige, mocha etc], and gray. Most of the colors mentioned are not your typical “spring ” colors. My buyers are always pushing for color, but I’m not too sure my Linea Ladies are so colorful!…LOL, yes I know hits of color are important like the Fiesta colors, Butter Yellow always does well and out of all the Fiesta colors Aqua was the best of the “colors”, but the first colors to sell in both the WK and the FJ were navy, hemp, black [WK] and  smoke. Am I getting his message correctly?

Hi Louis! Not sure if you are still looking for comments on color but I thought I would add my 2 cents worth. I do love neutrals – black, walnut, navy, grey, camel, hemp, smoke, etc. However I also need color by my face and the colors you have come up with for fall are exquisite. I love the cherry and the new ruby, the violet, and all your blues. The spring/summer colors were lovely in aqua, hemp, navy, and I loved the flamingo. It would be nice to have more white or cream for spring/summer too. So please don’t forget us “love of color” ladies. Thanks!

  2. Carol

I think, Louis, the neutrals will always sell more because EVERYONE wants those. Then, we buy one or two colors, but since we don’t all want the same colors, they sell more slowly. Every one needs black, but half will want red and half will want blue. I think as long as the quantity of neutrals is larger than the colors, it should work out OK.

I think I am a bit late with my answer, but still. . . I must say that I love color! While I appreciate a neutral, especially when all the pieces of the outfit tone together, I do like to mix things up with pops of color, esp. near my face. I love the jewel tones because they look best on me. So please, do not forget those of us who like color with our neutrals.

  4. Cynthia

I’m always drawn to teals and rosy(not orange) terracottas. I need color near my face.

For wardrobe basics I prefer olives, navy, browns, warm greys. My coloring is like Kate.

    Colors:
Louis, for spring please bring color. You give the best turquoise and tropical ocean blue. Your perfect pink is like no other and can be a neutral. I have every color of your medallion print from several years ago in jackets, tops and skirts; so classic, chic Italian and colorful. I need jewel colors or clear pastels near my face so maybe a line of scarves that mix the jewel colors with neutrals that point back to the whisper knit or ponte knit neutral colors. In any case, you design it and I’ll buy it. Thanks for all the posts with styling ideas and your inspiring QVC presentations.

  6. Karen in WA

I am like Andrea. I need color next to my face. I am too beige to wear beige, I look dead in gray or green. I am hoping for black and white in Feather Jersey, love lots of pink and blues.

  7. julie

I would love a MUSTARD ponte knit jacket (A233182)& skirt (A233183)

  8. Belle Femme

Thank you for asking, Louis. For me and my profession, the neutrals work best for jackets, blazers and pants but I love blouses and sweaters in a pop of color. I do have all of the colors of the ponte knit TSV jacket and matching skirt (save the ivory skirt which sold out), and those colors are amazing for my spring coloring. I recently received two WK sweaters in walnut and adore that color! I also love the topaz shade, which I own in the seamed jacket from last year and this year’s suede jacket. The pewter is nice but I woul love to see more items in the caviar color that you recently aired. I would really like a WK v-neck in the caviar and in spruce green. Thanks for your consideration of our requests. My closet is quickly being converted to primarily LDO.

I think you are truly hitting the nail on the head!! at least as for me .. I hardly EVER wear anything of color in pants … sometimes with a skirt … and I tend more toward the darker neutrals by choice — Am really liking the greiges — or the taupey/greys … Everything always in black … and more of the Pewters and Caviars of the latest offerings!!! I am still thinking but wanted to get my original thoughts in … THANK YOU FOR CARING so much about us and THANK YOU for your beautiful designs … XOXO to Jac! Amy aka Lacylass

  10. Rena

A grey boho would be so nice to go with all my black and white. Grey is such a wonderful neutral.

  11. Cela

Mushroom, Straw, shell, nude and soft dove grey, Celery green, soft salmon and navy for color. Of course Black and Linen White for accent.

But Louis, honey, we’re all going to WANT SOMETHING DIFFERNT. Don’t saddle yourself with what WE WANT. Be our COUTURE DESIGNER. What is YOUR VISION?

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

Dear Cela….you know I will….but it’s always good to get confirmation on things that are being reordered….especially the third and fourth and fifth times around

  12. Andrea

Only neutrals I can wear next to my face are black, charcoal, navy; browns are tricky.
If I want my doctor to believe I’m really sick I wear the one beige sweater that was a gift. Love the columns of color: I now have mallard blue and malachite in skirts and tops.

I would LOVE to buy your navy but I have so much trouble finding it anywhere in the marketplace or on the Q that I don’ have any and I did stop buying it years ago.I’m old enough to remember when black replaced navy.

The Q has it’s own reasons for pushing color; I HAVE to wear color next to my face. I don’t understand how colors date one’s clothes. Prints, yes.

  13. jmarie

I like to save my color for blouses and sweaters, and keep pants and jackets in neutrals. The exception is that I do like tea length interesting patterned skirts, not too bright, as a companion to colored sweaters and neutral jackets.

Ponte in dark olive please! I have an abundance of tops for olive, but no bottoms except cotton crops. And a request for full length pants for spring/summer!

I favor jewel tones, but any saturated non pastel and non muddy color works for me.

Love the summer darks, too. The lace jacket is lovely in all colors, but in a dark color it is phenomenal. Walnut, dark olive, navy, very dark blue purple would all be stunning. Not fond of pastel laces–too MOB for me. Thank you thank you thank you!

  14. Pecan Cookie

Ponte jacket, skirt, and pants: Pure colors that do not have a heathered look, that are unexpected, like the caviar. Any dark hues of taupe, grey, dark blue, brown, navy, and khaki, with new WK colors that echo these in a lighter hue but with a dusty undertone. Hopefully that isn’t too off-center for the Q. A dark mushroom ponte group would be awesome and Oh, how nice to wear with the tie-dye cardigan A223654. You really know how to do neutrals… more!

  15. Ann from Maryland

    Louis,

Thanks so much for asking for our input.

My 2 cents: Keep making the colors that you make. We appreciate your eye when it comes to choosing color. I’m sure the ones that don’t suit me suit other Linea Ladies with different coloring than what I have. And it’s nice to be surprised and try a new color or shade that we haven’t tried previously.

But PLEASE always make items in your dark navy. This color is so hard to find and I LOVE it!

    Ann from Maryland

  16. Carol

I like color but sometimes I find if I have a colored bottom it is hard to find the right top unless I go neutral on top. I would suggest if you do color you also give us the perfect little top to make it look like a complete outfit. I like the tonal look and have bought colored skirts from this line when it had the right top or sweater that matches. I would like to see a rusty orange and a golden yellow would also work for me.

  17. nikki

    Louis,
I love color. Being olive complexion, pastels just wash me out. I love having the option of a basic color bottom and having a choice of an unexpected color. I bought the ponte knit skirt in white, lapis and black – which I would love in dark olive. I loved wearing the lapis a lot and got the most use out of it this summer. I have a lot of neutral bottoms and so I love adding that unexpected color choice that you provide. I love the bold colors. I often buy the basic option and the unexpected color choice that you offer.

  18. LauraL

    Hi

I love color in tops but for bottoms and jackets, I prefer neutrals. This way I can accessorize with color. I also find where I travel a lot for work that I want neutral bottoms to allow for smaller packing and still have variety. If I brought a pair of really unique pants and had to wear them every 3rd day for 4 weeks, it would be very noticeable. For some reason more open to color in skirts than pants.

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

I agree almost 89% I usually like very neutral pants or colors that I call “blackened”………..on the rare occasion I do like to shock with RED….or…say LAPIS BLUE pants….hint…..hint…….but normally I save the colors for skirts. I love the WK skirt colors with all of the matching WK sweaters…..You can have a totally different dress “look” with just a change of a top. I loved Maria in the Violet sweater and skirt….and the fuchsia and malachite skirts ROCK too!

      1. LauraL

Hint taken – I will be on the lookout for say Red and/or Lapis Blue pants. My rules are not hard and fast just generalities or as I like to say everything in moderation including moderation. As far as the whisper knit skits – I absolutely love the colors and very often do columns of colors and mix and match colors.

      2. Goldie76

        Dear Louis,

I am doing my best to be your poster child for the WK skirt and sweater matches. Like you, I thought Maria was stunning in the violet sweater and skirt — so much so that even though I have the draped violet skirt from last year, I am springing for the version in the WK to go with the WK faux wrap sweater I already own. So far, I have two full monochromatic sets, in the fuchsia and the walnut. With the violet skirt, I’ll have three, and I’m working on the black. The skirt is on its way to me. When I see something I like (which with your line is pretty often, but with others, not quite so much), I go for it. These dress-like outfits will change their look with jewelry, scarves, jackets, etc. I’m very excited by them! With a different touch here and there — not to mention the difference in color — I am certain that I will look as though I have quite a variety. These colors may never come again, and I am a jewel-tone admirer. (You have excelled this season for both color creation and styles.) For that matter, most deep tones thrill me. Such colors do best with my coloring.

  19. maggie

I understand that neutrals are the basic building blocks but maybe more color for tops and neutral on the bottoms. When you said Fiesta colors, I say PERFECT ( I collect vintage fiesta :-)) and I am one who loves color, especially in spring and summer. Yellow could be both a neutral and a pop of color, and the blues of all shades are great. I hope this helps, I know you have a lot of opinions listed! Frankly, I will buy anything you design, you are the expert and I have always loved all of your things!

  20. designista

A233182 ponte jacket/skirt: grey/blue/green like a Silver Bismarck palm or Silver Buttonwood
A233187 asymmetric hem button front tunic: lapis
A233652 lace jacket: charcoal to be worn with beige pants
    A70208 boho: no thoughts
    A221808: lapis

For me, your black and navy are so close in color that I wouldn’t buy the same garment in both colors. I think lace looks cheap in light colors especially pastels. I don’t care for neutrals unless they work against black. I do think all white or all ivory is a smashing look. I don’t care for brown in summer, but olive works with a tan.

  21. Anne

    I Love Colors !

  22. Catherine

What a challenge you must have working with this buyer – pushing color for no legitimate reason when the things that consistently sell out first are navy, black, camel and (this season), walnut. And obviously, refusing to reorder items for which we are all clamoring. I am like the two other ladies who posted earlier. I wear dark colors ONLY for skirts and trousers. The darker the better. I like streamlined column dressing – no bohos, flared skirts, asymmetric hems, or oversized pieces for me. I will not wear some awful color or unflattering silhouette because it happens to be what every other sheep-like buyer or designer is pushing at the moment.

I would like to see MORE neutrals in the line to coordinate with the colored tops I already have. I would like to have a re-order of the whisper knit skirt RIGHT AWAY in the same colors in which it was just offered, plus NAVY. I mentioned this in my recently posted review of the item.

I would like some whisper knits for the spring collection that are not so long in the body.

I would like to see more navy in the spring collection – the lace jacket, a navy whisper knit dress, waist-whittling sweaters in navy.

I would like a sleeveless drape neck whisper knit sweater, constructed similar to last summer’s feather jersey version.

So that is my opinion on color and silhouettes that I would purchase if offered.

  23. Carol

I like to have a little of both. I usually have one piece of a neutral to anchor a color ensemble. I also like column dressing. Hey, I have the lavender crepe suit, so you know I’m not afraid of color. Typically, I would buy something in a neutral AND a color. So bring it all!

  24. CC

So want the ottoman jacket–it rocks! Love the two zipper on the jacket. Gosh sure hope I get one– on wait list. Fingers crossed. Louis why are there so few of each item offered? Makes me sad I missed this item and the new suede jacket in green. 🙁

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

Dear CC that is the budget allotted for Linea……….I have nothing to do with it.

  25. CC

I enjoy saturated colors. Right now I’m into shades of blue, celadon, aqua and icy blue greens. Particularly love the Japanese colors found in older kimonos and obi’s.

  26. GG

While I love jewel tones, I will only wear them on top and never on the bottom. I’m an accessory/shoe nut, so I reserve the bright colors for those items. I have several bright scarves, handbags, and shoes that I always wear with my neutrals as well as piles of fashion jewelry. I just prefer an overall neutral palette with the accents in color. With classic designs I prefer classic colors that will never date the item. Thank you for your wonderful designs!

  27. Waterbaby

    Hi, Louis:
I love color but only on the top. I prefer black, chocolate, gray, burgundy, camel, even forest green on the bottom. I also really like column dressing with matching tanks, sweaters and cardigans like you did with the feather jersey in hemp….the pencil skirt, pants, tank and open cardigan. The material is outstanding and the look of one color allows me to wear scarves and bold jewelry.

Please bring back the feather jersey pants in these darker or neutral colors and the various pieces that complete the look. They are perfect for travel, everyday and certainly for those of us in the South.

As for summer colors, I have the WK in the aqua, pink and lime and they will be around for years to come. But, there are only so many “fiesta” colors I will buy. I agree that pale yellow or gold works and I would like to see a champagne and blush colors. Soft and feminine. I see that your new pearls are listed as mocha mist and blue mist. I think tops would be fabulous in “mist” colors.

I have the short ponte knit skirt in black and I would buy it again if it came back in these neutral colors. And, in addition to the jacket, how about a vest that finishes the look but is not too warm.

Thank you for asking! I am so looking forward to receiving my two suede jackets and the camel and caviar pants and jackets. Fingers crossed they all fit!

Once again, congratulations on a successful show, blessings to you and Jac. Fran

  28. Pamela

As much as I love color, think it’s so darn chic to wear light Tans & Camels with my Summer White skinny jeans, Gold jewels & that ‘kiss’ of Sunshine on my skin. Just makes me feel rich!

Love my neutrals – Love my colors.

  29. Goldie76

    Lace Jacket – Ivory

Ponte Knit Skirt – Navy (and please, a re-order of the ponte knit jacket in navy; I missed out on it)

I love coral, but only in tops — not jackets or skirts.

  30. Sheesh

Hi, Louis…I feel like I am borderline harassing you—but I’m hoping they are going to order the Poly V-neck 3/4 sleeve top in a multitude of solid colors—a veritable Crayola Box! Also, Feather Jersey Pencil Skirt, Tank, Tee, Pants and Cardigan in BLACK!!!! White FJ pencil skirt (as it is lined), too! What about a couple of Feather Jersey pieces in a print (a la the Maxi Dress from last year which was a print)—maybe a Pencil Skirt and a Tank or Tee and Cardigan? Between the Drawstring waist skirts and the Feather Jersey Pencil Skirts, I lived in skirts all summer long (and I had two summers this year—the first was in South Africa in January, February and March, then July and August here in US)…and loved every minute of it!

  31. Mary

It bothers me that the buyers are pushing color, because I suspect that they are more concerned about how the clothes appear onscreen than on our backs.

I do love color, but when it’s too vibrant, too trendy or just too identifiable, it dates the item and limits the number of times you can wear it. These are difficult days, financially, for many of us. Fashion lifts our spirits. I don’t stop enjoying new clothes, but I am paying attention to wearability and value, and neutrals are important to me for those reasons.

Also, I always enjoy watching you combine new items with vintage Linea. It feels very ‘considerate’ to me, that you not only acknowledge that we want good value, but that you design enduring styles and have not written off last year’s style (or the styles from years ago).

I love how you combine colors in an unexpected way. I would never have considered the feather jersey until I saw you pair the smoke and hemp colors in your June 2013 post. It looked so chic. I thought another high point was seeing how you paired the Limoge Blue jacket with the Turquoise top. It reminded me of the sea.

  32. Kate

    Oh Louis,
I love colour! But especially, I like the contrast with basics of black, navy, white and grey. Having said that, I enjoys wearing my columns of cassis, mallard blue, all of the TSV suits [yes, I have all your colours! For spring, I would love to see the ponte suit in hot pink, bluey green aqua, butter yellow, burgundy [on the blue side], periwinkle. I hope you bring back the ‘short boho’ skirt-it is so lovely. I lean to the cooler palette, though have been doing my best to expand my horizons. I am so happy with your rich blues, fabulous reds, deep black and navy. It will be a while before my latest orders are in my hands, by the time dear lovely Loren has shipped things to Canada, and they have made their way through customs, but I am confident I will find many treasures to cherish in your collection. Thank you dearly!!!
    Kate in Calgary

    1. Kate

enjoy, not enjoys. My professor aunt who taught at universities in the States for years would roll over in her grave if she saw my lack of proofreading/poor typing. My apologies!
      [ps I love pink!]

    2. Carmille

Yay for the lovely Loren! She is shipping my items to me also! I am so thankful for her!

  33. Marta

A221808 – Black with Gold Buttons
A223652 – jewel tones to dress up holiday outfits
    A223183 – Navy,Tan, White

  34. Rebecca

I’m one of the oddballs that prefers color! Yes, I have neutrals, too, but I am so much more comfortable in color – I don’t even own anything in the beige/taupe/mocha family, and the only navy jacket I own is the TSV ponte knit jacket (I only bought navy as it was the only other color I could get in my size and I love that jacket so much!). I feel drab and blah in neutrals (most of the time) – wearing a color that I know looks nice on me – pinks, greens, reds, purples – just gives me an extra confidence. Perhaps you could do mostly neutrals with one or two color options, too? Love your designs, Louis.

  35. Beryl

Just another plea for FJ in neutrals. In NC it’s almost a year round fabric. Love it and you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. Enjay

    Yup!

  37. Chris/Jazzmom

I like colors but also think of clothing doing double duty and not just being for spring– fall comes and we want to use our spring clothing in the fall too. The neutrals like gray and navy are seasonless and can be utilized all year.

  38. Judi

Yes, I’ve always been most comfotable with a neutral palette, using color as an accessory. I did, however, buy your lime green and other bright feather jerseys, but toned them down with neutral tops/bottoms. With my neutrals (blacks, browns, navy, camel, gray) I prefer the darker colors.
    Thanks for considering our input.

  39. Renee

    Dear Louis:
The colors I Love for Summer are Sand and Sea
Thank-you for asking us Renee in Cleveland.

  40. Barbara in Virginia

I LOVE color, red being my favorite. However, during the warm weather months any “hot” color makes me feel warmer just to look at it. I do love and wear the “summer darks” and anything that is reminiscent of hand blocked, vegetable dye colors. I switch much of my jewelry in the summer to silver, as it just looks cooler. Am also a huge fan, however, of ethnic jewelry in the summer months. And colors that work with it.

  41. Gk27

    Love coral and blue tones

  42. Kate

I know color “pops” on TV but I’m not that comfortable wearing it preferring to add exciting accessories or the occasional colorful sweater to my black/navy/gray/khaki bottoms.

Also, with clothes so expensive these days, neutrals live on from season to season and no one ever says, “Oh she’s wearing THAT dress again.”

So, yes. It’s neutrals for me year round.

  43. Maia

Yes, I prefer neutrals except I also like pure red (alma mater color and looks good on me) and periwinkle blue, which I believe looks great on anyone! Here’s my specifics:

A-233182, ponte jacket – red, navy
    A233187, long top – periwinkle blue, bamboo/cream

    Thanks!

  44. Beryl

I love neutrals for any season
