Thank you for the reminder to thank our armed forces.

We are blessed because of their service.

We’re flying our flag today. This morning was a rather poignant, sad morning as our household had to adjust and change routines after the loss of my Father. I’ve had my elderly parents living with me since 2000. Each Memorial Day, Dad would be up early to get his flag out. My job was to take a photo of him beside the flag. I now have a series of annual “markers” – him in front of the flag wearing his VFW hat. For him, Memorial Day morning was more exciting than Christmas morning. He passed on last year and this is our first Memorial Day without him. Dad was a World War II vet, served in China, and flew the Himalayas (a.k.a. “the Hump”). I have the greatest appreciation and respect for all our service men and women, and honor the sacrifices they’ve made in the line of duty.

Sorry for your recent loss, thank you for sharing your story about your Dad. My Dad lived with us his last 20 years and he too passed on 3 years ago this past Dec. He served in the Air Force during WW II, he was an Air Police…I am very lucking to have had him with us to hear all his stories and to have all his pictures…those are memories that are all to often lost because families don’t live together as they did “back in the day” and there is no one close by to hear those fabulous stories…thank you.

Thanks for the beautiful pics of your flag, Louis! Ours is a bit smaller, but it’s proudly flying on our front porch. Also, our neighborhood civic association has a program where volunteers place small flags in the ground in front of each house in the neighborhood for Memorial Day weekend. As you turn onto each street, there are flags on both sides of the street for blocks – a beautiful sight! I always volunteer to place the flags for our street because I love what it stands for as well as how it looks. A happy Memorial Day to you and Jac!

I’ve been married to a Viet Nam war Veteran for 40 years (come June 14th), and I still think the stigma looms over these war Veterans because of America’s distaste (put politely) of that “Police Action”…There are many things America does not know and will never know about what it took to survive over there….There are stories that I have not heard and most likely will never hear as the Hubby doesn’t talk about the War too often, and after all this time he still has frequent nightmares waking up in cold sweats standing straight up in bed in a fighting stance (heck of a way to be awakened)…Regardless of the Service, regardless of war status/or not, we owe a great deal to our Service Men and Women and not near enough is done to support them and their families…OK, off my soapbox now…LOL.

Thank you, Louis, for highlighting the true meaning of this holiday. We should honor all those who sacrificed health, comfort and, sometimes, their life to help preserve the cherished freedoms we enjoy. For the present generation with its all-volunteer armed forces, a few — a small percentage of our population — carry this burden of sacrifice. We are indebted to all.

Hope you all have a wonderful day today, too. Thank you for your words about our armed forces. I am the daughter of a World War II veteran (now deceased) and never knew one uncle as his plane went down in the same war. We owe a lot to those who have served and who presently serve. God bless them all!
