************THE ICONIC WHITE SHIRT****************

shirt

**************There is no question about it********THE WHITE COTTON SHIRT has long ago reached  ICONIC status. It is as AMERICAN as JEANS……actually one goes with the other……Above, is a wonderful coffee table book for my Fashionistas………”AMERICAN FASHION”……….I am very proud that out of all the hundreds….if not thousands of photos that were submitted….my picture of Christy Turlington in my WHITE  COTTON SHIRT and TRIM BLACK STRETCH PANT was chosen for the cover…..It was no surprise to me that out of all the pictures I submitted this classic  photo of Christy, posed from an iconic painting by Matisse…was picked……………………………………….I guess if I had to choose one outfit women had to wear every single day…..this would be IT!…………………………..much Love …………Louis

“Kate’s” testimonial: I have FIVE of this shirt in white and two in chambray blue. I’ve never been one for the classic white shirt. While I love the look, for one to fit the shoulders I have to size down which creates a gap at the chest and overall feels like straightjacket. If I size up to fit the chest, the shoulders and collar are too big.

I’ve found some (mostly from Donna Karan and Vince ) that are a great fit, but in the $200-$300.00 region-yes, for a plain cotton shirt. This is the best quality shirt I’ve found at this price point (about $50) made from quality fabric that’s been cut to accommodate the chest AND fit at the collar and shoulders.

Mine have to be 5 years old by now and they’ve gotten better with age. Like a really fine man’s shirt, they get softer and more comfortable after frequent washings. I rarely iron mine as I tend to like a slightly rumpled look; I wash and hang to dry.

Of course, I would love to see more styles offered in this fabric, but as for the classic white shirt, this one’s perfection.

Thanks so much for bringing this book to our attention, Louis. I just went to Amazon and ordered a copy. Needless to say, I have the Kate in just about every color and the new yellow is on its way. Can’t wait to wear it with my yellow kimono cardigan!

I think you will enjoy the book…May I suggest…come warmer weather…you may want to roll the sleeve of the shirt so it doesn’t show below the 3/4 sleeve of the kimono. The width of the kimono sleeve does accommodate the rolled sleeve.

Truly an iconic look which I love even though I look nothing at all like this model unfortunately. Also reminds me of Katharine Hepburn who defied the “normal” and wore trousers and blouses a lot. I’m getting this shirt again in another color. Just can’t decide whether to get blue or the new yellow. Decisions, decisions!

I own this shirt in white and must say it’s the work horse in my closet. I wear it with jeans, skinny pants, a leather mini skirt and pencil skirts. I wear it buttoned up, sometimes open a little with a lacy camisole underneath and belted at the waist; sleeves down, sleeves rolled up; lots of jewelry or none at all. It’s my go-to piece of clothing.
Speaking of books, thank you so much for the suggestion of “Unbroken” as a good read. I gave it to my husband at Christmas and he absolutely loved it. He just finished reading it and can’t stop talking about it. He says it is both powerful and inspirational and one of the best books he has read – and that’s saying a lot since both of us are avid readers who, in our down time, usually have a book in our hands. So, once again, a big thank you for the recommendation.

I too enjoyed reading “Unbroken” and gave it as gifts for several men in my family. I am now enjoying your other recommended book, “Leaving Time” by Jodi Picoult!

Louis, you look extremely sexy !

I love the sleeves on THAT shirt, blousy and low cut. IT’S kind of sexy, too. Is it anywhere in our future, I hope? Some people have no idea how a great shirt can make your outfit, your entire style. Glad you put this up.

Dear Cela….I have tried to get blousy sleeves into the line, but they are either dropped of slimmed down….It appeals to a fashion few.

So sad, but I love my white Kate, and my blue one and my soon to be butter yellow to wear with my mock neck and v neck butter WK’s. Thank you.

From the iconic shirt to our legendary designer… both wonderful classics. Thanks for sharing your pics. Cannot agree more with Julia and Somersault.

  7. Somersault

Louis: Love the spread! The first picture of the dress with the black top and white bottom, is that a Norman Norell? I love the inclusion of Charles James as well! I love the Kate shirt and have it in white, your designs never, ever go out of style or fashion. Lovely!

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

It is absolutely Norman Norell who was my mentor. I am so glad I knew him, and did a summer internship at his Glamorous establishment before starting Parsons. Even at 18 I knew he was one of the great ones.

Gorgeous! That’s how every woman wants to look – sharply dressed and comfortable enough to strike a Matisse pose. Congratulations on being on the cover. Very exciting for you (and it makes it cool for me that I can write and tell you this). I’m just degrees away from a famous iconic American fashion designer and I get to wear your fantastic clothes every day. Life is good!

      What Julia said.

Fantastic! Stone beckons as a piece to go with that new multi-gored skirt. Love the clay look so much, too.
