“TO GLUE OR NOT TO GLUE”

It has come to my attention that there have been a few, thank goodness very few, problems with stones in the stations of the Byzantine necklace falling out. I was asked what glue would I recommend for gluing them back in. I notified my manufacture who was very upset that this problem was happening because they pride themselves on their quality. If you own any other pieces of my jewelry, all made by the same manufacturer, you know that the quality is far and above most costume jewelry sold anywhere. They got in touch with the factory, one, to notify them how displeased they were that this was happening and two, to ask what glue they would recommend. The factory said “Crazy Glue”. I have an extensive collect of vintage costume jewelry and from time to time a stone has fallen out. I have used “Crazy Glue” and “Super Glue” myself and they have both worked very well. My suggestion is to glue the stones in…… especially since the Byzantine necklace is sold out and who knows if it will ever come back. If you are not happy with the result, you still have until January 31st, or there about, to return it……what do you have to lose?…Again, I am terribly sorry that this has happened……regards, Louis

Kate mentioned Duco Cement in another post. Duco might be a better choice than super glue because it has more open time, it dries clear (whereas super glues can crystallize and whiten over time) and it is impervious to cold. It is an old, inexpensive but good product that you can get at most hardware stores.

Carol, that’s a good suggestion…..I have that glue too……I try all of them!

Crazy glue is great, but it has a very short open time, so I prefer to use E6000 which has an equally good bond, but allows you more working time to get it into position. It’s a gel glue that’s really handy to have around as it bonds metals, glass, plastics–all nonporous surfaces. I use a toothpick to apply it.

Just another suggestion for the more klutzy among us.
