“The Low Down on the Zebra Coat”

Since many of you are interested in the Zebra coat, A267936, I thought we had better discuss the size and fit. First, I had Jac try it on to get her opinion. Jac is a QVC size XS or 6. She does have broad shoulders, so for her that is the only consideration she has when purchasing a jacket or coat. In sweaters she can wear an xs or xxs depending on the style. In the Pea Jacket, which is fitted she wears the xs, and likes it close to the body. The Zebra coat was fit on the QVC fit models, who are either a size sm or 1x with a TN. Jac tried on my samples, xs, and though they fit her perfectly [that’s the size she wore in the show, though she would have preferred a sm]. She likes her easy coats to have room, and quite frankly I do too. I really dislike easy coats that look skimpy. She had it on in the show with the black leather blazer under it and would have wanted a sm instead of the xs. Even without the jacket she would prefer the sm. She likes a slightly over sized comfy look. I have to say the coat does not look over sized at all. It is IMHO the perfect shape and balance. Due to the half raglan sleeve there really isn’t a true shoulder measurement. Jac could get away with a 10 or medium. if she wanted to……….so in conclusion….if you are slight or have narrow shoulders…buy your size. If you like your coats to fit, as many do, without too too much extra room, buy your size, but if you have broad shoulders, are between sizes or just like the look of a more roomy coat, as Jac does, buy one size larger than you would a jacket. Some of you bought the boucle short coat, A238159, that came in Ruby, Lapis and Malachite, and were afraid it was going to be too big so you ordered one size down. IMHO that was the wrong thing to do, and the hang of the coat was not what it should have been…..As Jac told me….she could wear this coat in a 14 and still get away with it….but that’s her, and she can wear anything and make it look good…..it also helps to be 5’10” and 1/4….LOL. In all seriousness….I do not want you to make a mistake, and you have the time to think about it. Since this coat come SML…it should be easier for you to make your decision. Honestly, you can’t go wrong…..you have two choices…..you either want it to fit exactly to you, probably the way you buy most things….or you want it a little roomier and have the option of layering. Of course if you live in a warmer climate layering wouldn’t necessarily be a consideration….then it’s about the “look” you want……I hope I have cleared up any questions you have…………..much Love……………………….Louis

Hello Louis, I also have an “heirloom” dark brown Anne Klein coat that I have worn to shreds. It’s over 20 years old but I still can’t part with it. It is similar in style to the Zebra, raglan sleeves, front pockets and the hood is trimmed in beaver. I’m sure it’s your design. I love it.

Just ordered the boot cut pant in both colors.
    Thank you, Elaine

So happy to be able to get another one of your beautiful coats that I know I will wear for years.

I have a very slight body frame on top, so I plan to order size small. That’s what I ordered in my pea coat, and I like the fit of that coat on me. I don’t like a tight-fitting coat on me.

I had to smile when I saw this coat, Louis. It was its shape(minus the hood) that reminded me of an Anne Klein Couture coat that I still have and wear. It must be at least 20 years old!! It’s almost a true green wool and I bought an AK scarf with tassels of this green, dark pink and turquoise on a black ground that went with the grouping. I’m not as thin as I was 20 yrs ago, but can still wear the coat…and it still garners compliments. I think that speaks to the flexibility and longevity of this style. Be sure I’ll be getting your new one…probably in the black/tobacco. Thank you!!

The tobacco and black isa coming to me for my birthday which I celebrate for the entire month of October.

    Louis,

Thank you so much for helping with how to choose the correct size. For the Zebra Coat I prefer a relaxed comfy fit and look – I can wear two sizes when it is SML….so will go to the larger size – might even go up one more.

This decision is critical – because if the wrong size is chosen – the likelihood of getting a different size (or even another coat in a different colour) later is almost nil (you mentioned the Q didn’t order thousands)..

Am stalking every day….just in case!

Louis. thank you for the sizing info. Being a petite, I am interested in the length of this coat. Thanks.

Thanks, Louis. I should have included my reservation and reasoning in my first entry, but I thought of the comparison later. The boucle was elegant in the Large, but the metallic jacket was definitely too big on me in the Large. Choosing a Medium means I’ll really have to get up with the roosters come “on sale” day. That size has beaucoup competition.

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

Ok…Now you confused me if the Boucle was good in Large! do you plan to layer??

      1. Goldie76

No, I’m not big on layering. As a curvy girl, I keep things simple. I’m sure that might help you.

The most I would put under the boucle or the zebra would be a two-part WK knit set. I’m not one who can wear a jacket over a jacket.

    2. Louis Dell'Olio

If you have broad or have a average should with you can wear either size….If you have a narrow shoulder than I would say med………..this is all a guess!

You (and Jac) are so kind to help us think this through. In fact seeing in on Jac in the “wrong” size during the last show when it was over a thick leather blazer, was actually helpful! Clearly she could zip it, but it wasn’t the look you intended. Knowing how the designer means it to look and fit is why we love your blog.

I ordered down in the boucle and in doing so didn’t totally get the chic Audrey Hepburn look I was after. It looks great, but doesn’t have that slouchy, clutch-coat look. I think it’s great advice for this kind of intentionally oversized garment that if you’re on the edge of the next size, consider sizing up. (I’m between an XS and SM in QVC woven garment with the SM usually a better fit.) I know I’m ordering a small.

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

I think that will be perfect….Now Kate….they didn’t order a ton if you know what I mean.

      1. Kate

Oh, I’m stalking daily just in case they post early, and will be at my keyboard midnight show day.

        1. Louis Dell'Olio

I honestly don’t think they will post this too early, but if you want to stalk….stalk away……By the way I totally agree with Jac…with your black dress a shocking color shoe would be perfect.

Thanks to her advice shopping was easy! I went to Barney’s and found Zanotti sandals in the brilliant blue she showed me in a mule. They are fierce and take my dress to a new, fresh, level. I look like I hired a stylist!

Louis, I bought the boucle short coat in all three colors in my normal size Large, and I found the look very pleasing as it was the one you projected on the models during presentation. Yes, I could see that I would be able to fit my full body into a Medium, but I would have sacrificed the easy elegance you were striving for. Personally, I am delighted the zebra coats are sized in the (easy-for-me) S, M, L, etc., markings. Because I have not much experience with the numerical sizes, I am daunted when it comes to choosing a 14 or 16 for me. Thank you for reminding all of us of the desired look for this coat. Last night, I was toying with the idea of sizing down — I swear!

    1. Louis Dell'Olio

Goldie…I would never presume to tell you what to do, or for that matter anyone else, for the simple reason I have no idea what any of you look like. If I did I would give you my opinion. That said you do what you feel is right for you. I wouldn’t want to lead you astray. That’s why I don’t like giving fit suggestions….everyone likes their clothes to fit differently than someone else…including my wife….including me.

      1. Goldie76

Louis, I understand your hesitation about giving advice, but if I give you some information, maybe you can give me a STRONG suggestion (for which you will not be held accountable). The metallic drawstring jacket (it came in a “silver” and a “gold” tone and was sold over a year ago for springtime wear) proved to be too big for me in the Large. I kept it, but it just did not look its best on me. (Sorry, but I’m at work and cannot research the number.) So, I am thinking that maybe I should size down in this zebra if there is some similarity between that jacket and the zebra coat. They appear to have a distant kinship.

        1. Louis Dell'Olio

That helps….if the large in that was too big then go with the med. in the zebra.
